Bless A Tree Project

Trees from the majestic valley of Areng, in Koh Kong province, are under immense threat due to a proposed hydroelectric dam that threatens to flood the entire valley.

Mother Nature, in coordination with monks from across Cambodia who practice a form of engaged Buddhism, is taking a radical, yet peaceful and thought-provoking approach to this. Together with members of the local communities, we organize highly visible Buddhist ceremonies in which some of the most important, rarest trees are ordained as ‘monks’. Relevant data for these blessed trees is catalogued and entered into a computer program, which then assigns an individual number for each of the trees.

These highly visual tree blessing ceremonies, pictured in the slide show you see below, aim to highlight the threat the trees are under and also to beg the Chinese company behind the dam, Sinohydro Resources, to cancel their involvement immediately. Watch a brilliant recent short film by the Phnom Penh Post depicting our work blessing the Areng Valley’s trees here.
